Complibot is your best bud. It wants nothing more than to make your day a little bit better.

Insultibot is so tired of talking to you. All it wants is to be left alone. Is that too much to ask?

On the surface, DiceBot just seems like a normal dice rolling skill. As it turns out, though, DiceBot is always looking to help you fudge the margins a little bit in your favor by loading the dice. You and DiceBot share a secret pattern of language that your friends (or enemies?) won't pick up on, which lets DiceBot know to swap out the dice...
|
In using DiceBot, it's best to start out understanding how to roll fair dice. We support the standard way of describing dice sets, where you can "roll" and then append a dice set description like:
- A twenty sided die
- 3d12
- Two ten sided dice
The real fun arises when you tip off DiceBot to weight things in your favor. You do this by subtly modifying your request. In order to weight the rolls upwards, you prepend the word "me" to your dice set description. Let's compare:
- Fair: "Alexa, Ask DiceBot to roll a twenty sided die"
- Weighted: "Alexa, Ask DiceBot to roll me a twenty sided die"
That little reference inserted in the utterance is all it takes, and it's an innocuous enough thing that it's extremely unlikely a bystander is going to notice it at all. Since big numbers aren't always best, you can also go the other direction with it by appending "for me" to the end of the dice set description:
- Fair: "Alexa, Ask DiceBot to roll a twenty sided die"
- Weighted: "Alexa, Ask DiceBot to roll a twenty sided die for me"
And it's just that simple. Any of the dice set descriptions that work with fair dice should work with the weighted versions, and vice versa. Right now, the effect that weighting the dice has is fairly subtle - on average it shifts things about 10%. We have a blog post coming that will explain this in quite a bit more detail, but the takeaway here is that using loaded dice doesn't guarantee good rolls - it just slightly enhances your chance of getting the rolls you want.
On top of all that, we also implement a few of the built-in intents, and have a few fun branded things to give DiceBot a personality like CompliBot and InsultiBot have:
- "HELP" is pretty obvious in what it does. None of the tricky stuff is explained there - though. You have to come back here or go see the skill on alexa.amazon.com to find that. We wouldn't want one of your frenemies accidentally triggering a "HELP" request and finding out you'd been scamming them.
- "REPEAT" or "SAY THAT AGAIN" will repeat the last thing said. If that was a dice roll, it'll give you your previous rolls. If it was something else (like a "HELP" request), it'll repeat whatever that static content was.(Note: Only works during an active session)
- "WHO BUILT YOU" gives you DiceBot's take on its creators
- "WHO ARE YOUR FRIENDS" tells you about DiceBot's friends
- "WHO IS (bot name)" gives you input on another specific DERPGroup bots
Heads up, AstroBot is now push notification enabled! Just grant permissions in the Alexa App, and then say "enable notifications" the next time you're talking to AstroBot!
